National Building Museum

Engineering FUNdamentals Through Bridge Design and Construction

Saturday, January 17, 2015
10:00 AM - 12:30 PM

Registration Required.
Cost: $25.00

Grades Level: 5-9

Bridge Basics Program KitExperience one of the Museum's longest running and most popular programs, Bridge Basics. Learn about the fundamental engineering concepts behind bridge building. Then work in groups with other teachers to design and build your own bridge and, as students would, develop problem solving and collaborative work skills.

This experiential learning process increases student awareness of bridges and their importance within the built environment. Students learn about fundamental engineering concepts while using the design process as a method to solve real world problems.

Participants of this workshop will model lesson plans included in the extensive curriculum plan. We will also explore other included teaching tools and materials. Each participating teacher will also receive one Bridge Basics Program Kit ($110 retail value). This workshop is for teachers at accredited K-12 schools. We think it's best suited for students in grades 5-9.

The workshop includes:

  • Bridge Basics Program Kit for each participating educator ($110 value)
  • Hands-on activities designed for, and easily adaptable to, classroom use
  • Modeling of lesson plans and core activities
  • Educational networking opportunities with fellow teachers and museum staff

The National Building Museum's educator workshops are supported by The Hattie M. Strong Foundation.
